Project 2: Secret Lair thumbnails

Using the idea of a lens, I decided to draft another thumnail. Not sure how the set up of the environment in this one works, but it's pretty rough sketch here, anyway.

Using the intensified light it self to heat the sand.

I actually made many colour drafts but only saved this one, argh!!! Because the colours here have actually been changed a few times, they had became 'dirty' by this point. Not sure if the dull rusty colour scheme shows the atmosphere well, as the character is doing his work to save his people, where at this feels like there is some ill-doing. Also by this time the lighting had been lost
I created this simple tile to use on the walls in my next thumbnails and concept piece, inspired by their textiles. Their textiles features a lot of triangles, square, crosses, with clear lines. This textile is supposed to show that but in stone/mud.

  2. Hi Lucy - another very resolved drawing, but I'm going to show a clip from the Ridley Scott film Legend:

The thing I'm showing you really is the very dynamic way that the sunlight from above is directed - via mirrors - down and through into the darkness; you see, I still don't think it's clear that the 'sun from above' is being intensified into an energy source by which to 'melt the sand' - and it does seem as if in his environment, there might be an opportunity to think more about what's happening above the inventor's working area - is there some kind of mechanism suspended above the area for focusing the heat of the sun onto a container of sand, and from the container of sand, can we see the molten glass issuing forth? It just feels to me as if in addition to all you're working out through these drawings, that you could figure out the melting mechanism - and make it much more of a feature in the layout of your lair? Some more visual references for you to think about:

    1. there's something really satisfying about seeing how it's made, and I can really see how that's lacking in my pieces now, the whole exciting element to being an inventor, creating. Thank you so so much again Phil.

These are looking good, theres a good sense of depth and scale in these images :) however, I think the perspective is a tad off, but easily fixed! :D
